More than seventeen years of photographing weddings in Johannesburg means I know this city well: the late afternoon light on the Highveld, the character of its older venues, the quieter established gardens of Pretoria twenty minutes away. From boutique hotels in the northern suburbs to industrial spaces in Maboneng, the setting changes and the approach stays the same.
Close to two decades photographing weddings across Gauteng means arriving at most venues already knowing them: Shepstone Gardens and Summer Place in Johannesburg's northern suburbs, The Lakeside and Lace & Timber in Pretoria, the historic Rand Club in the city centre, industrial spaces around Maboneng, and countryside estates like Inimitable and the cradle venues further out.
Knowing a venue already, where the light falls in the late afternoon, how a space moves through the day, means less time working things out and more time paying attention to what's actually happening.
